Eskom moves to stage 2 load shedding

Friday, June 12, 2015

Pretoria - Eskom has moved from stage 1 to stage 2 load shedding as of 8:20am this morning.

“Load shedding was changed from stage 1 to stage 2 at 8:20am and this is likely to be until 10pm. This is due to a further shortage of generating capacity and increased electricity demand,” said the power utility on Friday.

Earlier today, Eskom started implementing stage 1 load shedding which allows for up to 1 000MW to be shed off the grid.

Stage 2 allows for up to 2 000MW to be shed, while stage 3 load shedding allows for up to 4 000MW to be shed.

“Any unexpected changes on the vulnerable and constrained power system could lead to a change in the load shedding stage at short notice.”

Eskom said it implements load shedding as a necessary measure to protect the power system and to ensure that maintenance is carried out in order to guarantee that the supply of electricity can be maintained in the long term.

“As we are currently experiencing cold weather conditions across the country, we urge electricity users to consider energy efficient ways of keeping warm.”

Eskom will use the published load shedding schedules which are available on the Eskom website (http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za) for Eskom customers.  Eskom customers can also contact its customer call centre 0860 037 566.
