Pretoria - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has sent a high level delegation to the North West to assess the situation that led to the closure of 19 schools in Tlakgameng Village.
Five schools were torched during a protest march by the community demanding a 20km tarred road between Tlakgameng and Ganyesa.
During the schools' re-opening on Tuesday, North West Education MEC Johannes Tselapedi announced the closure of 19 schools saying the situation was not conducive for learning and teaching.
Tselapedi also decided to shut down the schools to ensure the safety of learners and teachers' safety as the community vowed to continue with the protest until their demands are met.
The protests have affected 9 092 learners, including 262 matriculants, expected to sit for their National Senior Certificate examination.
The delegation, which left Pretoria on Wednesday, is expected to meet with district officials and the heads of department, among others.
Department spokesperson, Hope Mokgatlhe said Motshekga strongly condemns such acts of violence and urges those involved to take responsibility for their actions.
"A comprehensive statement will be issued when the situation has been fully assessed," Mokgatlhe said.
