East London - The Eastern Cape has almost finalized its team that will represent the province at the South Africa Games in October.

Provincial Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture Department (DSRAC) communications manager, Manzi Vabaza, said a tennis tournament at Selborne College this weekend will be the final stage before the team is announced.

"After this weekend, the selected teams will go to a workshop facilitated by the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University," said Vabaza.

There the team members will be taught about coaching, fitness, nutrition, psychology and diet.

The games incorporate 14 different sport codes for men and women, as well as for athletes with disabilities. Selection of the provincial team started at district level in June.

General team manager Adam Gugu said the multi-code sporting event helps integrate sports for athletes with disabilities with sport in general.

"The games will help bring down the divide in sports by having athletes with disabilities also taking part in tournaments," said Gugu.

Vabaza added that the SA Games are geared towards developing world class sport stars in the country. "These games will also revive the passion for sports that seems to be dying among our youngsters."

The SA games will be held in Polokwane from October 2.
