Easier access to electricity for Ekurhuleni residents

Pretoria - Ekurhuleni municipality residents will now be able to buy pre-paid electricity using their cell phones, ATMS or the internet, the municipality said on Tuesday.

In a move aimed at transforming the methods of accessing pre-paid electricity, the city says customers will now be able to use their phones, the internet and terminal points including the metro's over-the-counter points in customer care centres.

The additional portal of buying electricity follows the appointment of four new service providers, namely Easy Pay, Dajo Technologies, Expertron and Cigicell via private vendors across Ekurhuleni. Easy Pay will soon provide internet based vending, whilst cellular vending will also become available in the next month or so.

Municipal spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said residents will be required to register with each service provider in order to purchase electricity via their cell phones.

"With this array of choice and convenient alternative methods we are giving to residents, we are confident that the challenges around the issue of accessibility is now history and we are now focusing on the reliability of electricity infrastructure itself through investment in capital electricity network, refurbishment, development, planning and strengthening the electricity network," said Dlamini.
