Eastern Cape - The Eastern Cape Department of Transport will from 1 June increase their fees for vehicle licenses and driver's licenses, registrations and number plates.

According to the department, the 10 percent increase will bring the province in par with other provinces.

The fees for personalised and specific registration numbers will increase from R2577 to R2835 and R741 to R819 respectively.

According to the department, the decision was further informed by the increase in South Africa's Consumer Price Index, excluding mortgage rate changes for metro and other areas which is used by the South African Reserve Bank for inflation target.

The rate was up to 10.3 percent year on year in December 2008 from 12.1 percent year on year in November 2008.

The CPIX data showed that the CPIX hit 11.3 percent in 2008 from 6.5 percent in 2007 and the CPIX struck 11.5 percent from 7.1 percent in 2007.
