Pretoria - Mohokare Municipality in the Free State says the drought has severely affected Smithfield dam to a drying point.
The municipality on Wednesday said it has been dealing with water shortage problems in Smithfield as of 29 October as a result of the drought.
“We are currently drawing water from our second water source in Caledon River, which will soon dry out from the lack of rain,” said the municipality.
It said it is partaking in a joint project with the Department of Water and Sanitation. Through this, they should be able to draw water from boreholes and supply the community.
“Currently, some of the residents are still receiving water from their taps while the municipality supplies water through water tanks to those without running water in their homes.
“This is in partnership and assistance from private companies and local farmers that have offered to help in this dire situation, especially in the crucial areas such as schools and hospitals,” said the municipality.
The municipality apologised for any inconvenience caused and said it is doing everything in its power to ensure that services are provided adequately to the community. - SAnews.gov.za
