Pretoria - DNA tests to identify the remains of the victims who were burnt beyond recognition at a horrific crash in Zeerust are expected to be finalised this week.

Head of Communications at the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Lesiba Moses Kgwele, confirmed that police were investigating cases of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving.

He further said Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison MEC, Desbo Mohono, has welcomed assurances by the Road Accident Fund that it would assist the families of the victims with burial costs.

Fourteen people, nine of whom were educators from various schools around Mahikeng, died after being involved in collision that involved a taxi and a bakkie on the N4 Bakwena Highway outside Zeerust last Friday.

The head-on collision, suspected to have been caused by speeding, occurred just before 7am at Abjatterskop, about 4km outside Zeerust towards Groot Marico.

Nine of the passengers who burnt to death were in a Toyota Quantum. The deceased are said to be educators who were from Mahikeng on their way to a National Professional Teachers Organisation South Africa workshop in Rustenburg. - BuaNews
