Dignitaries set to grace AmaXhosa King coronation

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma will this morning lead a ceremony for the historic coronation of AmaXhosa King Ikumkani Mpendulo Sigcawu.

This is the first coronation to be conducted by President Jacob Zuma after 21 years of democracy. The coronation of the last AmaXhosa King was held in 1965.

King Mpendulo Calvin Zwelonke Sigcau is a descendant of King Hintsa who was killed in 1835 resisting colonial conquest and land dispossession.

The great lineage of the AmaXhosa nation Kings, include Phalo, Gcaleka, Hintsa and Sarhili who took over the Kingship when he was only a 20-year-old ikrwala.

Politicians, academics and traditional leaders from all over Africa are expected to attend the coronation which will be held at the Nqadu Great Place in the Eastern Cape.

These will include the representatives of King Letsie of the Lesotho Kingdom as well as the Consul-General of the United Kingdom.

President Zuma will be accompanied by ministers and other government dignitaries. – SAnews.gov.za
