The Gauteng Department of Education says it is working with relevant stakeholders to swiftly appoint service providers to repair two schools that were damaged by the severe hailstorm that hit the province on Monday.

The department’s MEC Panyaza Lesufi has expressed concern over damage caused by the hailstorm at Laerskool Protearif and Laerskool Muldersdrift in Krugersdorp in the West Rand.

“We, immediately [on Tuesday] despatched our Infrastructure Inspectors to both schools to assess the extent of the damages, and the inspectors are estimating the damage cost of about R4 million,” said the department.

MEC Lesufi was concerned that the tragedy occurred at a crucial time when learners are busy preparing for their final examinations.

“We can confirm that there was no teaching and learning at both schools on Tuesday. We are currently working with the School Governing Bodies, community members and other Education Stakeholders in negotiating for a temporary accommodation at neighbouring schools and churches around the area.

“We would like to apologise to our learners, educators and employees at schools for the inconvenience caused. We will continue to monitor the situation.” - SAnews.gov.za
