Deadline to add your voice to NDP extended

Monday, May 21, 2012

Pretoria - The National Planning Commission (NPC) has extended the deadline for comments and inputs to be made on its National Development Plan until May.

"Due to the robustness of the current debate on the plan, the NPC has decided to further open for written submissions until 30th May 2012, with the intention of giving South Africans more time to make their voice heard in South Africa's first ever long term development plan," the Commission said on Monday.

So far the NPC has received over 500 written comments and inputs to the plan from South Africans across all walks of life.

Since the release of the draft development plan in November, the NPC has been engaging all South Africans.

The plan aims to eliminate poverty and reduce inequity by 2030. The commission's Vision 2030 statement seeks to help the country to reduce its high unemployment rate to 14% in 2030 by growing the economy by around 5% annually.

The document, drawn up after a year of intensive work by the commission identifies nine key problems facing the country namely, poor education, divided communities, uneven public service performance, an unsustainable resource-intensive economy, a high disease burden, unemployment, existing spatial patterns, crumbling infrastructure and corruption.
