De-merit system not yet implemented

Pretoria - The points de-merit traffic system has not yet been implemented, says the Road Management Traffic Corporation (RMTC).

"We have not yet set a proper date, but the de-merit system will only be implemented across the country next year," RMTC spokesman, Tshino Mavhusa, told BuaNews.

This follows a false email which has been circulating, saying that the de-merit system had been put in place and that points were put on scale under one's Identity Number on the system for any traffic violations.

It further said one could unknowingly lose their license.

Mavhusa said the RMTC was concerned about the panic caused by the false email across the country.

"We are investigating the origin of the false email, but what is important is disseminate factual information to the public," he said.

Transport Minister, Sibusiso Ndebele, earlier this year said the implementation of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) throughout the country would only be in 2010. The de-merit system falls under the AARTO.

The system was piloted in Pretoria and Johannesburg to identify problem areas in the legislation and operational environment as the forerunner to the national roll out.
