Cogta DG transferred to Justice

Thursday, May 5, 2016

Pretoria - Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Des van Rooyen has agreed to transfer Vusi Madonsela to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development to serve as a Director General.

The Cogta Ministry said the request was made by Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Michael Masutha, following the resignation of the department’s Director General, Nonkululeko Sindane, on 30 March 2016.

The Ministry said this has necessitated the filling of the imminent vacancy on an urgent basis with a suitably qualified individual. Madonsela commenced his new duties on 1 May 2016.

“The imminent vacancy comes at a time when government seeks to deepen transformation and strengthen the functioning of our country’s justice system by, among others, improving access to judicial services for the vulnerable and previously disadvantaged,” said the Ministry.

Madonsela is a lawyer by profession, duly admitted to practice as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

“As part of his 15 years’ experience in government’s senior management service, he served as the Director General of the Department of Social Development for nearly 10 years and the Department of Cooperative Governance for over three years.

“The Minister of Justice and Correctional services is confident that Mr Madonsela’s vast experience in senior management of the department will add the necessary value in the administration of justice,” said the Ministry.

Madonsela has been commended for his contribution to Cogta.

“During Mr Madonsela’s term, he established administrative stability at the department. The department’s key programme, Back to Basics (B2B), was launched in September 2014 to ensure that municipalities serve all communities better.

“The department has now repositioned its role and adopted a new organisational structure. DG Madonsela leaves the department in a good state of health, as we enter the second phase of B2B,” said Minister Van Rooyen.

Madonsela will remain the chair of the technical Inter-Ministerial Task Team on Elections to ensure continuity in the management of projects relating to the August 2016 local government elections.

“This will be made easy by the fact that the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services is a member of the Inter-Ministerial Task Team on Elections,” said Minister Van Rooyen.

Minister Van Rooyen has appointed Muthotho Sigidi to act as Director-General of the department.

Madonsela expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its support during his tenure.

“I am delighted to have had the opportunity to make a contribution to the sphere of government closest to the people of our country. I look forward to re-joining the world of books in the Justice portfolio, where I hope to make a new contribution,” said Madonsela. - SAnews.gov.za
