Minister Van Rooyen counters media claims

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Des van Rooyen has refuted reports made by the Business Day newspaper that he failed to answer questions posed by the CoGTA Portfolio Committee.

The story published by the Business Day on Wednesday alleges that the Minister failed to answer questions during the meeting with the Parliamentary Committee, which took place on Tuesday.

“As a Minister in a democratic South Africa, I understand that the true test of democracy is the extent to which Parliament can ensure that government remains answerable to the people, hence the importance of effectively functioning portfolio committees,” said Minister Van Rooyen.

The meeting was set down for the Minister to account for his department’s performance. The Minister said he answered all questions posed to him, except those previously answered and those that are subjudice.

“The chairperson of the portfolio committee can attest to this effect, that Minister Van Rooyen did provide answers to the portfolio committee as he had always done,” said CoGTA.

Minister Van Rooyen said he understands the oversight function granted by the Constitution to Parliament to monitor and oversee government actions.

“There is no way that the Minister can attend such important meetings with an intention not to answer all lawful questions,” said the Ministry in a statement.

Minister Van Rooyen said he remains “committed to excellence and ensuring an effective and [functional] CoGTA portfolio” that is accountable to all the relevant structures. – SAnews.gov.za
