Citizens can still register to vote

Monday, February 10, 2014

Pretoria - Potential voters that missed the past weekend’s final voter registration can still do so at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) offices located through the country, the Presidency announced on Monday.

Although President Jacob Zuma announced 7 May 2014 as the election date; he has not proclaimed the date.

“The weekend of 8-9 February 2014 was the last registration weekend. However, voter registration will continue until the date of the official proclamation of the election by the president and the premiers, towards the end of the month,” Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said.

Once President Zuma has proclaimed the date, it will be gazetted and then the voters’ roll will be closed.

Maharaj said those who missed the opportunity must make an appointment to apply for registration, during office hours.

“They must always phone first to make an appointment,” he said, adding that the application will only be in person.

“No online or email registrations are permitted….they must please bring their valid -green, bar-coded ID book, smartcard ID or the valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC),” he said.

For all voter registration enquiries, individuals can call the IEC’s toll-free number 0800 118 000 or send an sms to 32810.

Despite challenges posed by the wet weather and service delivery protests, over 1.2 million people registered to vote this weekend.  – SAnews.gov.za
