Cadaeu, Modderfontein voting stations closed

Pretoria - Two voter registration stations in Cadaeu and in Modderfontein in the Gariep District in the Free State province could not open on Saturday because the dam has burst.

The overflowing of water in the streets made it impossible for officials and potential voters to reach the stations.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has set this weekend aside for South Africans to register to vote in the forthcoming local government elections.

Provincial Electoral Officer, Jabulani Mepha, said plans were underway to assist the local people to register and to check if their names are on the voters roll.

Despite the two stations not opening, people were trickling in at other stations and most of them were youngsters. "We hope to see more and more people coming in later in the day," he said.

Earlier this week Independent Electoral Commission chairwoman Brigalia Bam urged youngsters aged 18 and 19 to register to vote this weekend. The IEC also encouraged those who have already registered to confirm their registration status by SMSing their ID number to 32810.
