Pretoria – Government says while some infrastructure projects are lagging behind agreed schedules, there has been noticeable progress in some delivery areas.

The recent Cabinet Legkotla held in Pretoria noted that there has been a sharp increase in public spending on early childhood development. Officials noted that 114 million workbooks were delivered to all learners in Grade R to 9.

Furthermore, more than R5 billion has been spent by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme to assist underprivileged students. The construction of two new universities in Mpumalanga and Northern Cape is also underway.

“Cabinet adopted various action plans to ensure that all commitments for 2013/14 are met in the remaining months of the current administration,” said Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies at a media briefing on Thursday.

An ordinary meeting of Cabinet which took place on Wednesday last week, also welcomed the public launch of the sixth edition of the Development Indicators by the Minister in Presidency Collins Chabane.

“As the nation prepares to celebrate to celebrate 20 years of freedom, South Africans should be proud that life has changed for the better since 1994,” said Cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams in statement.

“The indicators show improvements in key areas and simultaneously point to the hard work still required to deal with some of our more persistent challenges,” Williams said.

Furthermore, the indicators encourage debate on the challenges the country faces and act as markers of socio economic progress. – SAnews.gov.za
