Burst water main at Grootvlei prison

Friday, November 13, 2015

Pretoria – Water tanks and buckets have been provided to the Grootvlei Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein, to meet the minimum water requirements of offenders, following a burst main water supply, last night.

The Department of Correctional Services said on Friday the water shortage had caused a limited impact on the normal functioning of all correctional centres in Grootvlei Management Area.

The facility currently accommodates over 2 200 inmates and the amount of water supplied can only be used for basic hygiene, food preparation, drinking, taking medication and for remand detainees that have to appear in court until the situation is rectified.

The management had briefed offenders and appealed for their understanding and patience during this period.

“The Department of Public Works is on site, assessing the damage and facilitating the repair of the burst pipe. The Fire Department of Mangaung Municipality is also assisting by providing water tanks for the duration of the repair period,” said the department. – SAnews.gov.za
