Friday, June 21, 2013

Pretoria - Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Obed Bapela is to lead a delegation of young people to Tanzania on Saturday - as part of the 5th OR Tambo Edu Tour.

Bapela, on behalf of President Jacob Zuma,  will also deliver a keynote address on the topic "A Rich Common Heritage for the Propulsion of Youth Excellence.”

The tour is organised by the SOMAFCO Trust.

The Deputy Minister's delegation comprises 15 young winners of an essay competition on a series of topics around how, as Young Active South African Citizens, they would mobilize other youth to participate en-mass in the upcoming 2014 Elections.

The aim of the O.R Tambo Edu Tour programme is to preserve and promote the legacy of the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College, which was established by the African National Congress in Morogoro, Tanzania, during the exile years, and also to honour the legacy of the late ANC President, O.R Tambo.

The programme targets the youth and traces an important part of the liberation struggle in addition to highlighting the power of international solidarity in fighting for and upholding human rights.

It also promotes cooperation on youth development between South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania.

Bapela said he was encouraged by the interest of South African youth in the tour, which augurs well for the promotion of the country's history and heritage.

More than 240 entries were received by SOMAFCO Trust for the competition.
