Pretoria - The African Union has extended its condolences to Algeria following the demise of former Algerian President Ali Kafi.
Kafi died on Tuesday at the age of 85 in the military hospital of Ain Naadja in the capital Algiers.
“We received the sad news with great shock and sadness. We recall and will miss his contributions to our common agenda of Pan Africanism and the Renaissance,” Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said in her message.
Kafi, who was born on October 17, 1928, was head of the High Council of State (HCE) from 1992 to 1994 after the assassination of former Head of the HCE Mohamed Boudiaf.
After the resignation of late president Chadli Benjdid and the security crisis sweeping Algeria, the army created a collective presidency called the High Council of State, which ran the country from July 2, 1992 to January 31, 1994.
He was also an ambassador of Algeria to several Arab countries, including Lebanon, Syria, and Tunisia, and a permanent envoy of Algeria to the Arab League. - SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua
