App to track postal packages

Pretoria - The SA Post Office (Sapo) has launched a free app to allow customers to keep track of all their parcels and locate the nearest Post Office branches.

“This is intrinsic to our new strategy of modernising our services as a group, with technology the critical enabler for customer solutions,” Sapo Chief Information Officer Mthoko Mncwabe said on Thursday.

He said the Post Office is using technology to improve customer experience.

The app, simply called ‘South African Post Office’, is available free of charge on the Google Playstore for Android devices and on the iStore for Apple devices.

The app tracks and traces both South African and international parcels via the allocated tracking numbers.

“It immediately reports where the item was dispatched from, where it was scanned en route and the name of the person who collected it. Customers can also simply scan the barcode of the track-and-trace label to track the item,” Mncwabe said.

The app also has a “find a branch” functionality, which uses satellite navigation to locate the user, and then provides all Post Office branches within a radius of 10 kilometres within their street address and contact details.

The app also shows whether motor vehicle licence renewals can be done at each branch.

More than three million motor vehicle licences were renewed at Post Office branches in the last financial year.

Recently, the Post Office launched e-Registered mail, which is an e-mail with a full audit trail and proof of delivery.

“It can be legally used where the law requires paper-based registered mail, but is has great cost and convenience benefits.  We will continue to develop e-commerce products that give our customers convenience and a great experience,” Mncwabe said. – SAnews.gov.za
