Air Force One departs for South Africa

Pretoria - Air Force One has just departed Washington DC for South African shores, carrying US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama.

Joining the Obamas on Air Force One are former US President George W. Bush, his wife Laura Bush, as well as former US President Bill Clinton, along with his wife, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Former US President Jimmy Carter and his wife are also expected to arrive in South Africa to attend the Memorial Service on Tuesday of late former President Nelson Mandela.

A statement issued by the White House at the weekend said the Americans will "pay their respects to the memory of Nelson Mandela and participate in memorial events” honouring the passing of the anti-apartheid leader.

In a media briefing on Monday, Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Collins Chabane said the fact that international leaders are making their way to South Africa at such short notice, reflected the special place Madiba held in the hearts of people around the globe.

“We are touched by the fact that many countries have declared periods of mourning, ordered that flags be flown at half-mast and draped or lit landmarks in the colours of the South African flag. We truly appreciate these gestures,” he said.

Obama had paid a glowing tribute to Mandela when news of the passing on of the elder statesman broke, whom he regards as his own personal hero.

“They're grieving the loss of a man, a moral giant who embodied dignity, courage and hope, and sought to bring about justice not only in South Africa, but I think to inspire millions around the world,” said Obama at the time.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, followed by the official state funeral at his home village of Qunu in the Eastern Cape on Sunday.
