Afriqiyah confirms 13 South Africans on board crashed plane

Pretoria - Afriqiyah Airways has confirmed that 13 South Africans were on board flight 8U 771 which crashed in Tripoli, Libya, on Wednesday morning.

Other passengers' nationalities include 67 Dutch, two Libyans, two Austrians, one German, one Zimbabwean, one French, one British, four Belgium, 11 Crew members (Libyan nationals) and one unknown (to be notified upon confirmation).

Psychological, spiritual and medical assistance are being provided to the relatives and friends of those who died in the plane crash.

Airports Company South Africa, together with Afriqiyah Airways are hosting the families and close friends of the deceased at the O.R Tambo International Airport.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has also offered support to family members and relatives of the plane crash. Families and friends who wish to get assistance can contact the Emergency Call Centre (on 012 351 -1000).

Meanwhile, in Tripoli, families of several Dutch passengers killed in the crash arrived in the city on Thursday.

The relatives of the passengers were accompanied by the Dutch Foreign Ministry's secretary general, a forensic medicine team, and a number of Dutch aviation safety experts.

"Thirty-eight of the victims were traveling with Stip (travel agency) and 24 with Kras (travel agency). Nine Dutch people had booked their flights themselves," a statement by the ministry said, noting that the nine people include the family of the nine-year- old boy Ruben, the sole survivor.
