946 rhino poached in SA

Pretoria - The number of rhino poached in South Africa since the beginning of the year has increased to 946, the Department of Environmental Affairs said on Thursday.

“The total number of rhino poached in South Africa since January 2013 has increased to 946, as the number of people arrested for rhino poaching-related offences climbs to 330,” said the department.

Since the start of 2013, 127 alleged poachers have been arrested in the Kruger National Park.

The Kruger Park continues to bear the brunt of rhino poaching in the country, with 573 rhino being poached for their horns since 1 January.

Of the total number of rhino poached, 106 rhino were killed in Limpopo, 85 in Mpumalanga, 84 in KwaZulu-Natal and 82 in North West.
