Pretoria – Metrorail says it will make 41 trains available on Tuesday to deal with mourners who will be travelling to FNB Stadium in Johannesburg for the official memorial service for late former President Nelson Mandela.
The services of the 41 trains, with the capacity to transport between 60 000 to 80 000 people from the different corners of the province, will be made available for free.
Mourners are encouraged to travel by train using Metrorail’s safe and convenient Park ʼn Ride facilities at stopping stations because no private vehicles will be allowed in the FNB Stadium precinct.
“Metrorail will provide a safe, reliable, efficient and hassle-free transport service to thousands of mourners expected to come out in numbers to attend the official memorial service to reflect on Madiba’s life and his contribution to the world at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg, on 10 December 2013,” said Gauteng Metrorail in a statement.
As tens of thousands of people are expected to stream to the stadium from early in the morning, Metrorail will commence services to Nasrec Station from 5am.
Metorail said the first train would arrive at Nasrec Station at 5:55am and the last train will depart from FNB Stadium after the conclusion of the memorial service.
Transport will also be provided to the overflow venue at Ellis Park Stadium in central Johannesburg as well as the overflow venues at Orlando Stadium and the Dobsonville Stadium, both in Soweto.
A total of 300 buses have been made available to transport dignitaries to the FNB Stadium. They will be picked up at various points.

There will be also be two dedicated train sets shuttling between Johannesburg Park Station -Nasrec Station, Westgate - Nasrec and Johannesburg - Doornfontein.
Metrorail requested mourners to gather at the stations to catch the special dedicated trains, 30 minutes before departure time. No other trains will be provided outside these times.
These trains will depart back to their place of origins after the memorial service.
