Pretoria - Learners who wrote matric last year under the new curriculum and want to improve on their marks on any subjects or rewrite subjects they failed have until 21 January to register to do so.

The Department of Education says candidates must lodge their registration at their school's district office.

"Candidates who wish to apply for supplementary examinations in terms of admission requirements to higher education or work need to submit documentary evidence in this regard and complete a registration form available at the district office," the department said.

According to the department, candidates are responsible for obtaining admission letters for the supplementary examination from the district office where entries were submitted.

These admission letters will be available from the district office on 6 February 2009.

The admission letter, together with the candidate's identity document, will be required before being permitted to enter the examination room.

Supplementary examinations will be conducted at cluster centres linked to the candidate's original centre from 17 February to 23 March 2009.

"They will be required to produce a valid form of identification such as an identity document or passport when registering for and when writing the supplementary examinations," the department said.

The timetable for the supplementary examination can be obtained from the department's website www.doe.gov.za.

Learners can also call 0800 202 933 to verify if they qualify for the supplementary examination or for further information.

Unsuccessful candidates who wrote the November 2008 NSC examinations should contact the school where they wrote to obtain permission to enrol for Grade 12 in 2009.

Candidates may also decide to register at a public Further Education and Training College.
