SADC ministers converge in Namibia

Pretoria - International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane is expected to travel to Namibia where she will represent South Africa at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers Meeting.

The meeting is scheduled to take place from Monday to 17 August in Nambia's capital Windhoek.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation said South Africa would participate in the meeting within the context of strengthening SADC which it described as the primary vehicle to achieve economic development and integration in the region.

SADC is regarded as a building block in consolidating the African Agenda.

Food security in the region is expected to be a talking point at the meeting, where a report on food agriculture and natural resources will be considered. Another subject that will be high on the agenda is the implications of the global economic crisis on the region.

Other issues to be discussed include institutional arrangements for the SADC Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), a report on the EPA processes, and progress made in the Eastern and Southern Africa and East African Community EPA.

The meeting will also be represented with sector and cluster ministerial reports, as well the report of the executive secretary.

The finances and administration of SADC will also be discussed.
