President Ramaphosa notes charges against General Masemola

Thursday, March 26, 2026

President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted the decision by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to charge National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, as well as his upcoming court appearance on 21 April 2026.

President Ramaphosa had also taken note of the arrest of 12 senior police officers in connection with a procurement-related matter.

“President Ramaphosa will be addressing the matter concerning General Masemola in accordance with the law.

“The President working together with the Minister of Police is committed to ensuring that the SAPS remains stable and able to continue fulfilling its policing mandate,” the Presidency said in a statement on Wednesday.

The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, confirmed on Wednesday that the summons relates to the Medicare 24 procurement tender.

Masemola was appointed as National Commissioner of the SAPS in 2022, tasked with strengthening crime-fighting efforts and restoring public confidence in policing.

The latest developments come amid ongoing concerns about corruption and maladministration in parts of the police service, particularly in relation to procurement processes.
