Government commends serial rapist sentence

Thursday, November 22, 2018

Government has welcomed the 208-year sentence handed down to a serial rapist who for years stalked and preyed on young women and schoolgirls in Mdantsane and East London.

Luvuyo Malawana Mananga from NU16 Mdantsane was found guilty by the Bhisho High Court earlier this month for a spree of crimes between 2007 and 2011, including 11 rapes.

“We commend the police and the judicial system for their tireless efforts in ensuring that justice has been served in this case and that this man is removed from society for the rest of his life,” said Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) Acting Director General Phumla Williams in a statement on Thursday.

She said the sentence should serve as a deterrent and warning to woul-be rapists that the law will bite hard and perpetrators found guilty of violence against women will be punished.

“Fighting women abuse and gender-based violence is a priority of government," Williams said.

She has encouraged communities to work together with police, prosecutors and courts to ensure that criminals are arrested and convicted of all crimes committed in society. –SAnews.gov.za
