Pretoria – A leader of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) and his associate were arrested for the alleged possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the Vaal.

“A joint operation involving the Vaalrand Organised Crime, the K9 and the Flying Squad led the officers to a house in Vandebijlpark, where the 48-year-old AWB leader was found with two rifles, two shotguns, two pistols and 2 136 of different calibre ammunition,” the Hawks said on Friday.

The suspect claimed that he had bought the firearms from a certain house in Vereeniging.

On Thursday, a 42-year-old man, who is a member of the AWB, was also arrested for being in possession of nine rifles and three pistols on a plot in Laparadiso Estate in Vanderbijlpark.

The two will appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on Monday for possession of unlicensed firearms.

In a separate incident, members from the Hawks firearms unit, in conjunction with Ekurhuleni Metro police and National Intelligence members, followed up on information about a house in Dawn Park, in which there were firearms.

“Upon arrival, the officers found three firearms and 22 live rounds of ammunition wrapped in plastic and hidden inside a stove,” the Hawks said.

They also found a maroon Audi A1, which was reported stolen in Pinetown. – SAnews.gov.za
