Pretoria – The law is about to get tougher on those who break the rules of the road as 49 new traffic officers have joined the ranks of the provincial traffic authority.
The newly trained graduates have been instructed by the Limpopo MEC for Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison, Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana, to adopt a zero tolerance approach on members of the public who commit traffic offences.
“To let a driver off the hook whilst under the influence of alcohol or driving at high speed is not only corruption but unpatriotic and makes you an accessory to murder,” said MEC Mokaba-Phukwana at a parade for newly trained traffic officers at Seshego Stadium in Limpopo on Tuesday.
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) 2014/15 annual report, 4 500 crashes took place on public roads between April and August last year. The main contributors to these tragedies were speed and alcohol abuse.
MEC Mokaba-Phukwana impressed upon the graduates that they have a constitutional duty to ensure that people are safe on the roads. She thanked the officials for choosing law enforcement as a career.
She said government is committed to recruiting and training more traffic officers to continue with the mission to make the country’s roads a safer place for all. – SAnews.gov.za
