E Cape legislature, IEC to educate voters

Monday, July 11, 2016

Pretoria - The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will today embark on a Voter Education Campaign across the province to encourage and educate residents to exercise their right to vote.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature on Sunday said residents should expect a visit from Members of Parliament (MPs), National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs), Municipality Councillors and representatives in various towns, who will educate the electorate on the importance of participating in elections.

“Voter Education campaign is an instrument to enhance public participation as the cornerstone for constitutional democracy.

“The campaign is an initiative of the Legislature in partnership with the IEC to reach as many people as possible ahead of the coming municipal elections.

“This initiative took off the ground after an observation has been made of the poor turnout by youth in voting,” said the provincial legislature.

Its key focus, it said, is to encourage first time voters, to influence the youth and other potential voters to participate maximally in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for 3 August 2016.

It said the campaign kicked off in Peddie on 20 June and will continue until 25 July. It will be rolled out in partnership with Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. - SAnews.gov.za
