Pretoria – The chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Transport, Dikeledi Magadzi, says she is concerned about the increase of road accidents and the rate of fatalities.
According to the Department of Transport, 237 people died on South Africa’s roads from 29 April to 2 May. During this period, the country’s roads experienced 179 fatal collisions.
“This is particularly shocking because we had a significant reduction of road fatalities during the Easter weekend.
“We need to instil a culture where road safety becomes a personal responsibility and negligent behaviour is eradicated,” Magadzi said in a statement on Wednesday.
She has welcomed the initiative to investigate the increase in road accidents by the Road Traffic Management Council (RTMC)
“Behaviour on the roads, especially by young people, should change and the committee is satisfied that traffic laws are oriented in such a way that the country is safe,” Magadzi said. – SAnews.gov.za
