Pretoria - North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has urged communities to continue saving water.
Premier Mahumapelo was speaking following a two-day provincial Executive Committee (Exco) Lekgotla on Thursday.
The province is one of two in the country whose damn water levels are at 45%.
“This is concerning. Communities are called to observe the water saving measures which government has circulated extensively as water is a scarce resource in the current drought climate,” said the Premier.
The Lekgotla mandated the Premier to announce measures that will help the province overcome the drought when he delivers the State of the Province Address (SOPA) on 26 February.
The Lekgotla, which was attended by municipal managers, heads of department and mayors, also received a report on the Auditor General’s outcomes that showed improvement in some municipalities, while others still need serious attention.
The Lekgotla, however, took a dim view on the lack of progress in Tswaing and Ventersdorp municipalities.
“The North West University has agreed to deploy its expertise to assist the provincial government in ailing municipalities,” said Premier Mahumapelo.
The Lekgotla deliberated on the current global economic meltdown and looked at measures to create jobs and economic activities, which Premier Mahumapelo will outline in his SOPA. – SAnews.gov.za
