Pretoria - Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Fikile Xasa, will today embark on a two-day monitoring visit to the OR Tambo District Municipality to strengthen democratic institutions and improve service delivery.
The department on Thursday said the MEC will do this through the implementation of the Back to Basics Programme. He will be joined by his top management team led by the Head of Department (HOD) Nombulelo Hackula.
The Back to Basics approach is a government programme to serve citizens and communities better by improving service delivery in municipalities.
“The municipality, amongst other things, is faced with backlogs in service delivery including housing, water, sanitation, and roads infrastructure.
“The five pillars of the Back to Basics programme are putting people first, delivering basic services, good governance, sound financial management, and building capable local government institutions,” the department said.
According to the department, the MEC said the department is making a statement of hope through the implementation of the Back to Basics, to work together to expand the frontiers of human dignity and create better communities.
“I have a clear electoral mandate to deliver on key priorities that must ensure that visible, tangible and positive changes are felt in all our rural and urban communities. Back to Basics is our strategic service delivery model to serve our people better,” said MEC Xasa.
During the outreach visit, COGTA said MEC Xasa will interact with political and administrative leadership of the municipality, Ward Committees as well as other key stakeholders.
On Friday, the department said MEC Xasa will be hosted in Ngangelizwe, Mkhathini Primary School to celebrate the International Nelson Mandela Day.
“The day’s activities include painting of two blocks of classrooms, a staff room, grass cutting and cleaning of the school yard and garden. 20 certificates will be handed over by MEC Xasa to participants of the Community Work Programme (CWP) who were trained for First Aid and Home Based Care,” said the department. - SAnews.gov.za
