NW legislature adopts resolution on province’s name

Thursday, April 30, 2015

Pretoria - The North West Provincial Legislature has adopted a house resolution for changing the province’s name.

This follows the sitting of the legislature on Tuesday, which adopted the resolution for the North West province name change.

The move follows a notice of motion tabled in the legislature sitting of 21 April for a debate on the North West province name change. The motion was then debated at the house sitting of 23 April, where the Speaker of the Legislature, Sussana Dantjie, deferred the adoption of the resolution to the next sitting of 28 April.

During Tuesday’s house sitting, an adoption of the resolution was made but the matter was decided by a vote through a secret ballot system.

“For the resolution to be adopted as a house resolution, it required 2/3rds majority of members in support of the adoption of name change as per Section 104 (2) of Chapter 6 of the Constitution.

“Twenty-two members voted in support of the adoption of the resolution, while five voted against such an adoption,” said the office of the Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature.

The Speaker announced that the house resolution will be sent to Parliament for further processing and engagements.  Further processes will include the matter being referred to a committee that will start the public participation processes and may ultimately lead to the amendment of the Constitution to reflect the new name of the province. - SAnews.gov.za
