Pretoria – Cabinet has welcomed the successful state visit by Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, which saw the signing of five agreements between the two countries.
These include the Bi-National Commission (BNC) Agreement, which aims to elevate relations between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
President Mugabe arrived in the country last week Tuesday accompanied by his wife Grace. This was his first state visit since 1994.
During President Mugabe’s visit, the two countries signed the agreements on cooperation on water resources management and the establishment and functioning of the Joint Water Commission. They also signed an agreement regarding mutual assistance between customs administrations.
The countries also signed memoranda of understanding on diplomatic consultation and trade cooperation.
The MOU on diplomatic consultations will establish a mechanism for regular diplomatic talks on issues in Africa and other matters of mutual interest.
“The key objectives of this MOU are to establish a mechanism for regular diplomatic consultations on issues of strengthening bilateral relations, security and cooperation in Africa,” said Minister for Planning, Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, during a post Cabinet briefing on Friday.
The MOU on trade cooperation aims to provide a platform for the two countries to consult and share experiences towards boosting economic development.
The parties agreed to cooperate through trade promotion, resolution of impediments to trade and building of technical capacity in various areas identified as well as general skills developments.
South Africa and Zimbabwe have a long history of regional affiliation and cultural ties. The people of Zimbabwe have played a significant historical role in supporting the liberation struggle in South Africa. – SAnews.gov.za
