Pretoria - Sergeant Lesiba Sekele, one of the protectors of the late Public Service and Administration Minister, Collins Chabane, has been laid to rest today.
The 38-year-old, who died alongside Minister Chabane and his colleague Lawrence Lentsoane were killed in a car accident along the N1 last Sunday, was buried in Ga-Mashashane, in Limpopo, today. The three were involved in a collision with a truck.
In addition, to granting an official funeral category one status to Minister Chabane’s funeral, Sergeant Sekele and Lentsoane, who was buried on Saturday, have been afforded official funerals.
Police Minister Nathi Nhleko, National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega and Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha were among the dignitaries that attended the funeral.
Earlier on Monday, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa paid a visit to home of Sekele where he promised that all three families will be supported even beyond the burial.
“We want to be as supportive as we possibly can because it’s important that we should demonstrate the South African government’s condolence and sense of loss at the departure of the three members.
“Our soldiers have fallen, three trees that were standing strong have fallen and their departure is a huge loss to the people of South Africa and to the government of South Africa and indeed their own families as well,” explained Deputy President Ramaphosa at the time.
Sekele, who joined the South African Police Service (SAPS) in 2003 after graduating from Technicon Pretoria, was on Sunday described by neighbours and relatives as a person that was full of laughter.
According to the SAPS, the sergeant’s two children 9-year-old son, Kagiso and 3-year-old daughter, Leago, would receive assistance with regards to tuition from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Education Trust.
The Trust was established by the SAPS to support the educational needs of children of police members who die in the line of duty. - SAnews.gov.za
