Ballot counting nears finish line

Pretoria - With the counting of ballots nearing completion in the 2014 general election, the African National Congress (ANC) remains top on the leader board.

At 5:19pm on Friday, the ANC maintained its lead with 62.23%. At the time, 99.53% of the national votes had been counted (from 22 157 of the 22 263 voting districts).

In second position is the Democratic Alliance (DA), which set a new record of getting over four million votes. The party has so far secured 22.15% of national votes.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) remains in the third place in the national votes count, with 6.30% from 1 147 485 valid votes.

The ANC is leading in all the provinces, except at the DA’s stronghold, the Western Cape. The DA is leading with 59.43%, while the ANC follows with 32.85%, where 99.94% of votes have been counted.

The total valid votes cast in this election are 18 210 552, while spoilt ballots are 250 057 (total votes cast are 18 460 609). The voter turnout is 73.41%, while registered voters number at 25 146 477. - SAnews.gov.za
