Pretoria - Six people were killed at Eskom’s Ingula pumped storage scheme site in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, the power parastatal confirmed.

“Eskom is saddened to announce that six people have been confirmed dead,” said the utility of the incident that took place at around 9.15am.

The incident happened in the incline high pressure shaft that connects the top dam to the power house.

“About 15 people were working in the tunnel when a working platform failed and left several people injured,” said the power utility.

The storage scheme consists of an upper and lower dam, each with a capacity of approximately 22 million cubic metres of water.

The utility is launching a detailed investigation into what it calls an “unfortunate incident”.

Earlier in the day, Eskom said that a rescue operation was in progress. - SAnews.gov.za
