Pretoria – Johannesburg’s Emergency Services says alternative accommodation has been organised for the hundreds of residents who were left homeless after a blaze destroyed over 100 shacks at Cleveland’s Jumpers Informal Settlement.
The fire, which broke out on Thursday and left several residents suffering from smoke inhalation, was reportedly caused by an unattended paraffin stove, though investigations are still underway.
Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said affected residents were given shelter at the nearby community hall and school in Denver.
“Organisations have also come to the aid of the residents. Meals on Wheels has been cooking hot meals for the residents. There is also another Chinese organisation, called the Sushi Foundation, that is assisting with blankets and food parcels,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za
