Pretoria - Police are confident that the mob that allegedly killed three suspected cable thieves in Lenasia South on Wednesday will be behind bars soon.

Police are searching for members of the community that were part of the mob that allegedly set alight a bakkie while the three suspected thieves were trapped inside.

"We have conducted a preliminary investigation at the scene and hope to make arrests soon," police spokesman Captain Mpande Khoza said.

He said community members spotted six men in a bakkie at about 1am on Wednesday and suspected that the men were stealing electricity cables. A bolt cutter, equipment used to cut through iron sheets and a gun were found in their possession.

A mob then allegedly attacked the men.

"The three men who were at the back of the bakkie managed to escape but other three were trapped in the cab. The mob then allegedly set fire to the bakkie with the three men still inside. All three died at the scene," he added.

Police are investigating charges of murder.
