Pretoria - International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane has concluded her working visit to Mauritania which was aimed at taking bilateral relations to new heights.
Minister Nkoana-Mashabane's visit to Nouakchott was at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mauritania, Vatma Vall Mint Soueina.
The Minister also held courtesy meetings with Prime Minister of Mauritania Yahya Ould Hademine, and Minister-delegate for African and Maghreb Affairs Khadijetou M'Bareck Fall.
“The Ministers discussed the status of bilateral relations between South Africa and Mauritania and conducted the signing of Agreement on the Establishment of a Joint Commission of Cooperation, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding on Regular Bilateral Consultations,” the department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) said on Tuesday.
The two Ministers also had an opportunity to discuss a broad range of regional and international matters of mutual concern and interest.
Some of these discussions focussed on matters of peace and security in the Sahel and North African regions.
Minister Nkoana-Mashabane also extended an invitation to her counterpart to pay an official visit to South Africa, which she accepted.
The date of the visit will be determined through the diplomatic channel.
“The aim of the visit will be to inaugurate the Joint Commission of Cooperation which was signed during the working visit.”
Minister Nkoana-Mashabane is currently on a working visit to the vast, arid state on the edge of the Sahara desert, Niger. - SAnews.gov.za
