Pretoria - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Friday travel to Mauritania for the inauguration of that country’s president-elect Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.
Abdel Aziz will be inaugurated on Saturday, after winning the presidential election last month, with more that 80% of the votes, securing a second term in office.
Deputy President Ramaphosa will represent President Jacob Zuma at the inauguration, which will be held in Nouakchott, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) said on Wednesday.
Pretoria has been in support of the implementation of the democratic roadmap undertaken by the military transitional government following the coup d’état of August 2005 in Mauritania.
“These efforts contributed to the restoration of constitutional order and stability in Mauritania, leading to South Africa’s support for the lifting of the African Union’s suspension of the country on 10 April 2007,” said Dirco spokesperson Clayson Monyela.
In terms of economic relations, progress has been recorded between the two countries in the areas of fisheries and mining.
This is in addition to the economic cooperation agreement that is ready for signature, which will facilitate the opening of trade and investment opportunities for the two countries. - SAnews.gov.za
