Govt, trade unions meet to discuss wage dispute

Pretoria - Government and trade union negotiators are meeting at the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) in Centurion today to discuss the implementation of the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) plan.

Recently public sector doctors embarked on a strike over the OSD, calling on government to address the issue.

According to Sefako Nyaka, spokesperson for the Department of Public Service and Administration, government will put forward a proposal on the offer to the unions.

"We hope that there will be an agreement reached on the proposal," he said.

Mr Nyaka said the meeting will not only focus on the health sector, but will also cover other government clusters.

On Monday, the parties met and agreed that the matter be referred to PSCBC, which aims to provide a platform for the state as the employer and the public service unions to engage constructively over matters of mutual interest.

The agreement was reached after Minister Richard Baloyi had spent almost the entire day locked in discussions in a bid to avert a threatened public sector strike.

The OSD agreement was reached after a public sector strike in 2007.

At the time, government resolved to introduce the OSD for public sector workers in an effort to address their pay and working conditions.
