Yawa conveys condolences to family of businessman

Pretoria - North West MEC for Public Safety Howard Yawa has expressed condolences to the family of a murdered Potchefstroom businessman.

Soolman Karim, 61, was murdered by armed robbers outside his furniture shop on Monday morning.

The MEC commended the arrest of three of the four suspected robbers.

"The prompt response and courageous action of our police has demonstrated our resolve to win the war against crime. The police will hunt down the fourth suspect until he is apprehended," said Yawa.

Two of the three men allegedly accosted Karim's employees and robbed them of an undisclosed sum of cash and airtime vouchers.

An employee sustained slight injuries when he was allegedly hit in the face with the butt of a gun while Karim was shot by two suspects in the parking area when he was getting out of his vehicle.

Two of the suspects were arrested in Ikageng Extension 6 following a car chase and shootout with the police.

Police recovered undisclosed amount of cash and air time vouchers stolen during the robbery, a VW Golf getaway car and two illegal firearms namely a .38 revolver and a 9mm pistol.

The three are to appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate Court soon on charges of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
