Pretoria - Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele on Tuesday called on individuals to take part in the upcoming Road Safety Summit as officials try to intensify the fight against road accident deaths.
The summit, to be held next month, hopes to bring together vehicle manufacturers, public and private donors, non-governmental organisations, the religious sector and victims of road crashes for a campaign towards safer roads and vehicles.
"Together, we must all do much more to reduce the economic and emotional devastation caused by road crashes and road deaths. The millions of people who use our roads everyday deserve safer roads," Ndebele said.
He was speaking following the release of the festive season traffic statistics in which it was revealed that 1 582 lives were claimed on South African roads between 1 December and 11 January.
Ndebele said "Community Road Safety Councils" will soon be part of every municipality in the country.
The councils will empower communities to identify road safety challenges and interventions in their respective localities and to act as ambassadors for road safety.
