Pretoria - The ICT sector can look forward to new developments as South Africa hopes to be nominated onto the council of the world's top policy-making body for the telecoms industry.
Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda is in Guadalajara, Mexico, to attend the industry's most significant conference, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) 18th Plenipotentiary Conference.
South Africa is aiming for a nomination onto the ITU Council. The body is tasked with setting the ICT industry policy worldwide.
Representation on the council would be a boon to the country's growing industry. South Africa is the world's 20th largest consumer of IT products and services globally.
Nominations will take place on 11 October.
Industry members, intergovernmental organisations and the United Nations will give input regarding ICTs globally.
South Africa hopes to influence debate on industry reform, infrastructure development, cybersecurity and climate change.
The conference wraps on 12 October.
