Pretoria - South Africa and Korea are expected to explore the promotion of energy and technology co-operation between the two countries.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who begins his two-day working visit to Korea today, will sign a cooperation agreement on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy with that country.

The visit, according to Motlanthe's spokesperson Thabo Masebe, will pave the way for important initiatives - following South Korea's willingness to share their knowledge-based development experience with South Africa.

"The South African delegation will explore possibilities for the promotion of energy and technology cooperation, concentrating on an energy mix that includes clean coal, nuclear, renewable and related technologies," Masebe said.

Motlanthe's visit takes place within the context of cooperation in the fields of energy and technology, and also in his capacity as Chairperson of the National Stakeholder Energy Advisory Council.

The deputy president, who is accompanied by Energy Minister Dipuo Peters, will hold talks with President Lee Myung-bak, and will also meet with the Korean ministers of science, technology and education.
