Correctional Services on US study tour

Pretoria - In a bid to beef up its own management practices, the Department of Correctional Services has sent a delegation to the United States to visit correctional facilities there.

During the seven-day tour, the 11-member delegation will visit a maximum security facility, a community corrections office, a juvenile centre, a female centre, a pre-release centre and a parole re-entry centre in New York.

They will also be briefed on the Parole Board System of the New York State Division of Parole, classification system, emergency response system and on strategies to reduce re-offending rates.

The study tour is a follow up to a visit by Minister of Correctional Services Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula in April 2010, when she made an undertaking to return with a representative section of strategic managers that are central in conceptualising and driving the implementation of a departmental transformation programmes aimed at better service delivery.

Correctional Services National Commissioner Tom Moyane, will lead the high-level delegation.
