Nzimande welcomes France’s first hydrogen-powered vessel in Cape Town

Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, has welcomed the Energy Observer, a hydrogen-powered boat that made a stopover at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront for the first time.

The Minister also officially opened the one-of-a-kind vessel to the public from 12 - 20 June, free of charge. 

The Energy Observer has been described as the first hydrogen-powered, zero-emissions vessel, which is self-sufficient and capable of drawing its energy from nature, while aiming to preserve it.

SARS destroys illicit cigarettes valued at R43m

The Customs Division of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) has begun to destroy illicit and smuggled cigarettes, valued at R43 million, at the Beitbridge border post.

In a statement on Monday, SARS Deputy Commissioner, Johnstone Makhubu, said 2 000 master cases (or 20 million) cigarettes will be destroyed and that destruction of the illicit and smuggled cigarettes is likely to last a few days.
